The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 contains prohibitions relating to online money games, advertising and fund transfers. MeitY publishes the Act and associated rules. A 22 April 2026 PIB explanation states that the Rules take effect on 1 May 2026 and establish a process for distinguishing permissible social games and e-sports from prohibited online money games.
For the authoritative wording, read the government publications directly. Changes, determinations, other applicable laws and the exact facts of a service can matter. A generic game name is insufficient to decide legal status.
Why old state-only summaries are inadequate
An older article may describe a state-by-state approach or discuss whether a game involves skill. Do not assume those descriptions establish current permission for an online money service under the newer central framework. Verify the current law and the specific mode rather than relying on search snippets.
